Project Highlight #1

GLS MALSR Pier Replacement
Location: Galveston, TX
Client: Federal Aviation Administration

The lighting system for Runway 14 at Scholes International Airport (GLS), known as the Medium-intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (MALSR), is currently supported by a wooden Trestle-type structure. This structure extends approximately 1,400 feet Northwest from the shoreline into Galveston Bay. Originally constructed in 1983 and refurbished in 2008, the existing wooden support is now scheduled for demolition. The plan involves designing and constructing a new concrete structure in its place. The design phase is currently underway, permitting has been finalized, and construction is set to commence on April 2, 2024. The entire project is anticipated to conclude by October 2024.

Project Highlight #2

N W MALSR Pier Replacement
Location: New Orleans, LA
Client: nEW oRLEANS lAKEFRONT airport

The Medium-intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (MALSR) at New Orleans Lakefront Airport (New) relies on a wooden Trestle structure that stretches about 2,000 feet from the shoreline into Lake Pontchartrain.

In 2010, the trestle support structure underwent rehabilitation, involving the replacement of lower horizontal bracing, 'X' bracing, and connecting hardware on the original wooden supports.

Tandem Services, acting as the Design-Builder, is tasked with creating an entirely new MALSR support system, akin to the current one, by removing all existing wooden components—piles, bracing, and bents—and substituting them with concrete piling, bents, and a deck. The contract for this project has recently been awarded.

The design phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Construction is planned to commence in May 2024 and is slated for completion by December 2024.
